I heard you loud & clear!
Although this is a typical sentence with this phrase, I don’t think I’d use it as a sentence in The Language Lab. 🚫
Why not?
Well, because I pronounced each word fully and clearly - which is something I might do if I wanted to express how annoyed I am with someone who has repeatedly told me what to do. In fact, my mom might say this is how I sounded when I was a teenager. 🙊
But, the truth is that we don’t often hear phrases like this pronounced so fully and so clearly.
Listen here:
The officer’s instructions came across loud and clear.
We want this message to be loud and clear to everyone in the company.
I made it loud and clear that late homework assignments were not acceptable.
In these sentences, the individual words in these phrases are NOT pronounced fully and clearly. The and is reduced to just an ‘n’ or ‘in’ sound and it’s often connected to the first word. Loud-in clear. 📢
Many listeners, when they hear it, think that it’s just one word, instead of a whole phrase.
This is how listening in English is different than listening in many other languages - the ones that have a solid sound-script connection. There’s an extra step that you need to do - first you hear loudenkleer and you have to decode it as loud and clear so that you can truly understand what is being said.
Let’s look at a few others.
Black and white
I don’t really think it’s a black and white issue.
Back to back
I’ve been in back-to-back meetings all day.
Give or take
It’ll cost around $100, give or take.
Step by step
I’m learning to play the piano step by step.
High and dry
My cell phone died, leaving me high and dry without a way to call a taxi.
These short phrases are a great way to start ‘tuning your ear’ 👂to these connections and reduced sounds in English.
The more you start to recognize these patterns, the less you’ll have to consciously process them when you’re listening.
So, this month in The Language Lab, we’ll be looking at these two-word phrases — binomials, if you want to be technical — in different ways. To start you off, I’ve created The Rhythmic Ritual game. Each day, you can pull a card to see your fortune (tied, of course, to a common binomial phrase). The link is in the text below. Enjoy!
